Since 1973, Bikram Choudhury has been teaching his method of yoga which consists of a precise sequence of hatha yoga postures, accompanying dialog and taught in a heated room. The term "hot yoga" is directly attributed to Mr. Choudhury's yoga method and along with his wife Rajashree Choudhury they are dedicated to the continuance of teaching Bikram Yoga - the original and authentic "hot yoga." Bikram, Inc., is the corporate affiliate of Bikram Yoga College of India and is responsible for the franchising of Bikram Yoga studios in the United States. Bikram Yoga studio owners and instructors are dedicated, passionate and committed to the authentic teaching of Bikram Yoga. It is because of this dedication, passion and commitment to Bikram Yoga along with their desire to share the amazing health benefits of Bikram Yoga with their community, that they are Bikram Yoga studio owners. If you are just looking to own a yoga studio, or are looking to have a fitness job or a business investment, then a Bikram Yoga franchised studio is not right for you. We are currently franchising Bikram Yoga studios in the United States. The following are a few commonly asked questions regarding the process of opening a new franchised Bikram Yoga studio. If you are interested in opening a Bikram Yoga studio in a country other than the United States the franchising offices will also be able to assist you. Do I need to be a certified teacher? In order to be considered for a Bikram Yoga studio you must be a certified Bikram Yoga instructor and have completed the 6 months and 75 hours of teaching at an authorized/franchised studio. Bikram Yoga is dedicated to the development of qualified teachers through its semi-annual Teacher Training Program. Please click on the Training 'tab' to obtain information on how to become a certified instructor. I just completed Teacher Training, can I apply for a franchised studio? No, you must first complete the 6 months and 75 hours of teaching at authorized/franchised Bikram Yoga studio before you can apply to become a franchised studio owner. While you are completing this portion of your training we cannot 'hold' or 'reserve' a location/city. I am Certified Bikram Yoga instructor can I open a studio? If you are a certified Bikram Yoga instructor and have completed 6 months and 75 hours of teaching, please fill out the Franchise Contact Information Reply form on this page of the website. This form will automatically be sent to the franchising office and someone will be in contact with you. Just because you are a certified Bikram Yoga instructor does not automatically mean you will be able to own a Bikram Yoga studio. There is an application process that is followed when authorizing the opening of a new studio. Can I open a studio if I have not Re-Certified? Bikram Yoga College of India requires that in order to be a valid certified instructor you must obtain recertification training every 3 years from the date of your original certification. Only valid certified instructors will be considered for a Bikram Yoga studio. You can become recertified by successfully completing our Recertification Teacher Training Seminars. Please refer to the Training section on this website for more information. After you have become Re-Certified you should then submit a Franchise Contact Information Reply form. What Happens Next? The process for applying to become a franchised Bikram Yoga studio owner can take several months. Filling out the Franchise Contact Information Reply form is the first step. Can I Reserve or "Hold" a City? We cannot 'hold' or 'reserve' a city where you are interested in opening a Bikram Yoga studio in advance of you having completed the franchise application process. Can I get a copy of the FDD? You will receive a copy of the Franchise Disclosure Document ("FDD") once the Franchise Application and Questionnaire has been received and you have been approved to proceed in the application process. The FDD is provided only as a part of this process. Are there studio layout specifications? Yes, we do have a minimum total square foot and minimum amenities requirements for our studios. We will provide you these specifications once you have been approved to open a studio. I want to move my existing Bikram Yoga studio to a new location do I need prior approval? Yes. Before you can move your existing Bikram Yoga studio you must contact the franchising office in writing of your desire to move your studio to a different location. The proposed new studio location/address and layout must be reviewed to ensure it meets our requirements. What if I have other questions? In March of 2002 my heart beat increased to 200 beats per minute. The electrical current in my heart malfunctioned due to the scar tissue from my 1985 heart attack. My good health from practicing Bikram yoga kept me alive.
