Yoga Expo to Host First Annual "International Yoga Asana (Posture) Championship - Bishnu Charan Ghosh Cup" During Maiden Expo at L.A. Convention Center, September 25-28

Los Angeles (July 18, 2003) - Giving thousands of attendees the chance to witness a discipline performed at its highest level, Yoga Expo 2003 will present the International Yoga Asana (Posture) Championship-Bishnu Charan Ghosh Cup, a new competition hosted by the Bikram's Yoga College of India, and executive produced by Bikram Choudhury himself, taking place during the first annual expo at the L.A. Convention Center, from September 25-28. The International Yoga Asana (Posture) Championship-Bishnu Charan Ghosh Cup also represents the first major competitive event of its kind ever held on U.S. soil.

These competitions have been held in India, Japan, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina and Italy, but never before in the U.S. The International Yoga Championship - Bishnu Charan Ghosh Cup offers an opportunity to unite those who practice various forms of yoga while elevating awareness of yoga and its benefits in the U.S.

The International Yoga Asana (Posture) Championship-Bishnu Charan Ghosh Cup is open to practitioners of all forms of yoga. Regional competitions will narrow down the finalists who will compete at Yoga Expo, with first and second-place winners from each state in the U.S. and other countries advancing to the finals. For 2-3 hours each day during Yoga Expo, competitors will demonstrate various yoga positions. On Sunday, September 28, the judges will choose a winner at the final event. The first-place winner receives a two week trip to the country of their choice and $3,000 in cash. Second-place is $2,000 in cash and a full scholarship to Bikram's Yoga College of India. Third to fifth-place prizes will be various scholarships and cash awards.

Four official judges of the all India Championship will be flown to Los Angeles to judge the finals at Yoga Expo. Dr. P.S. Das and former Mr. India winners Mr. Kamal Bhandari and Mr. Hiten Roy, will judge the event along with Mrs. Rajashree Choudhury (former All India and NationalYoga Champion) and Mr. Biswanath Ghosh of Ghosh's College of Physical Education, son of Bishnu Charan Ghosh.

Bikram Choudhury, creator and executive producer of Yoga Expo, is recognized as one of the most world renowned and knowledgeable Hatha yoga teachers in the world, and has developed his own series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees. After becoming a multiple Indian National Yoga Champion, he emigrated to the U.S. and , in 1970, founded the Yoga College of India, which has since grown into the world's largest yoga training organization, with 750 affiliated YCI schools worldwide. While teaching his unique method of therapeutic yoga internationally for over 30 years, he has worked with Western medical professionals to apply the benefits of yoga to regenerate tissue and heal chronic ailments in the modern quest for wellness. The International Yoga Asana (Posture) Championship-Bishnu Charan Ghosh Cup 2003 is named to commemorate the 100th birthday of Bikram's Guru, Bishnu Charan Ghosh.

Yoga Expo, the first show of its kind to bring a complete range of the varied disciplines and healing powers of yoga directly to the public, will feature hundreds of seminars and workshops, plus special presentations from cultural luminaries including Deepak Chopra.
