Chronic Fatigue Syndrome |
CFS - collection of persistent, debilitating symptoms, the most notable of which is severe, lasting fatigue. It is known variously as myalgic encephalomyelitis, chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome, and postviral fatigue syndrome.
I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome 2/98. Prior to that I had been in a rear end auto collision in 1996 which impaired my neck and back (whiplash injury). Slight scoliosis hindered my recovery. After the accident I continued to experience discomfort that greatly hindered my lifestyle. I then had a head on collision in 12/98 which exacerbated my problem. The doctors/P.T stated that I would always have some type of pain and would just have to be careful in my daily activities. I started doing Maryann Nassa's yoga class in August 1999 sporadically. (ed note: Maryann Nassa's Bikram Yoga studio is in Cranston, Rhode Island.) Boy, was I like a wet droopy noodle the first few times! Legs shaky, couldn't move the next day, every muscle in my body ached! I started more consistently in 2/00. I now go 2-3 times per week. I can safely say that after years of physical therapy, chiropractors, and just merely waiting for time to heal my injuries, nothing compares to the benefits I've received doing Bikram yoga in a short 4-5 months. My back (or my entire body!) has never felt stronger and I have been able to resume the things I love. I can now lift things without being in pain the next day, can do housework (how fun!), I can lift a small child without worrying, and my life is just so much better. My Chronic Fatigue symptoms have also improved as well. I feel that I am about 90% better in that department and still working towards 100%! I am very grateful for this class and for the fine and safe instruction given by Maryann. She has always encouraged me and inspired me and it's just opened a whole new world for me. Now I am not only physically better but mentally as well. I am
more patient, calm, my concentration is better and my mind just feels more open and
creative. My sleep is improved and my PMS is practically gone, too! I now take my 9 yr old
niece, Carissa to class and she loves it too! I love this class and what it does. I am
glad I stuck with it (the beginning is not easy but you just get through it). If I can
give one piece of advice to a new student it would be to NOT GIVE UP! You must be patient
with yourself and you must try this at least 3 times to get an understanding of the
wonderful benefits it has to offer. |
